Window Bench & Ikea Hacking

collectionAfter moving into our new home it quickly became evident to my wife and I that our front window was lacking any semblance of style. My wife wanted a window bench and I wanted a place to display some of our collectibles.
Knowing that custom millwork would be expensive I set about seeing what ‘off the shelf’ components I could track down.
On a ‘research’ trip to Ikea we came across the  Bergsbo showcase and it looked like it would be an ideal solution to our dilemna but unfortunately we soon found out that it did not come in a single door model. I knew that we could buy one and always ‘hack’ it in half but it seemed a shame to pay full price for something that I’d promptly cut up. Luckily we were able to find one in the scratch and dent area at a steep discount so our project was on its way!
One question was ‘what kind of material was I going to use to fill in the blanks with?’ My eyes quickly turned  towards a Mikael workstation cabinet that I was unsuccessfully trying to sell on craigslist. It was the right colour/finish and had the pieces of suitable size and thickness for the project! The project was rounded out with a few extra purchases from Ikea; a Benno CD tower, some Gruntal cabinet lights and some recessed spotlights. Home depot supplied a few pieces of white shelving and hardware.
After the initial layout was determined some adjustments were made to accomodate a dog crate and redirection of venting. So for a lot less than custom millwork we were able to have a custom fit display and bench area!

I like it. Did you make the cushion or find it? I want to do something similar for my 2 dog crates.

    Thanks for the input.
I had the cushion custom made as I couldn’t find anything the right size.
The foam is from Foamite, the fabric from Designer Fabrics and the work from Soft Options Upholstery.
I would have sewed it myself, but was having other stuff upholstered at the time and figured I might as well get this done too!
